The workouts hit every muscle, the stretches tested my limits, and the routines demanded focus I wasn&#8217;t used to. Some days, I walked out of class sore and tired, wondering if I could keep up. But something in me wanted to try again &#8212; and again.</p><p>Over time, I started noticing small changes: I could kick higher, move faster, and stay calmer even when things got hard. There&#8217;s something empowering about learning control &#8212; not just of your body, but of your mindset. Taekwondo isn&#8217;t only about fighting; it&#8217;s about discipline, respect, and balance.</p><div class="subscription-widget-wrap-editor" data-attrs="{&quot;url&quot;:&quot;https://www.plantscholar.com/subscribe?&quot;,&quot;text&quot;:&quot;Subscribe&quot;,&quot;language&quot;:&quot;en&quot;}" data-component-name="SubscribeWidgetToDOM"><div class="subscription-widget show-subscribe"><div class="preamble"><p class="cta-caption">Thanks for reading Plant Scholar! My plants &#8212; from mint to scallions &#8212; have been growing like crazy lately. Seeing them thrive under my care gives me the same quiet satisfaction I get from mastering a new form or technique in class. Both take patience, consistency, and a little faith that the results will come if you keep showing up.</p><p>So even though taekwondo is challenging, and even though some days my legs ache and my arms feel heavy, I&#8217;m not stopping. It&#8217;s become part of my rhythm &#8212; just like watering my plants or checking how much they&#8217;ve grown overnight.</p><p>Hard work, growth, and persistence &#8212; that&#8217;s what connects both my taekwondo practice and my garden. One strengthens my body, the other calms my mind. Together, they remind me that good things take time &#8212; but they&#8217;re always worth it. &#127793;</p><div class="subscription-widget-wrap-editor" data-attrs="{&quot;url&quot;:&quot;https://www.plantscholar.com/subscribe?&quot;,&quot;text&quot;:&quot;Subscribe&quot;,&quot;language&quot;:&quot;en&quot;}" data-component-name="SubscribeWidgetToDOM"><div class="subscription-widget show-subscribe"><div class="preamble"><p class="cta-caption">Thanks for reading Plant Scholar! What started with just a small spider plant and a cutting of my Monstera has now grown into a cozy collection that includes my Malabar spinach vine winding its way up a support, and even a new Persian Shield with its striking purple leaves. Each plant brings a different texture and color, and together they&#8217;ve turned this little corner into something that feels alive and soothing.</p><p>I&#8217;ve noticed that caring for plants has become more than just a hobby &#8212; it&#8217;s a grounding ritual. Wiping down leaves, adjusting their light, or just watching new growth unfurl has given me small but meaningful moments of calm. It&#8217;s funny how these green companions can teach patience and consistency in such subtle ways.</p><div class="subscription-widget-wrap-editor" data-attrs="{&quot;url&quot;:&quot;https://www.plantscholar.com/subscribe?&quot;,&quot;text&quot;:&quot;Subscribe&quot;,&quot;language&quot;:&quot;en&quot;}" data-component-name="SubscribeWidgetToDOM"><div class="subscription-widget show-subscribe"><div class="preamble"><p class="cta-caption">Thanks for reading Plant Scholar! The energy is completely different from tending plants &#8212; instead of slow, steady growth, hackathons are all about speed, creativity, and building something exciting in a short burst of time. I&#8217;m planning to experiment with some projects that combine data, AI, and maybe even plants (because why not?).</p><p>There&#8217;s a balance in doing both. Plants remind me that growth takes time and steady care, while hackathons remind me that sometimes you just need to throw yourself into the chaos and see what blooms. Between the two, I&#8217;m hoping to not just grow a greener corner in my room, but also grow as a creator and problem solver in the tech world.</p><p>So here&#8217;s to a season of new leaves, fresh ideas, and the thrill of hackathon nights ahead.</p><div class="captioned-image-container"><figure><a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" Plants add so much character to a room&#8212;they soften hard edges, bring in fresh energy, and remind me to slow down. Recently, I decided to transform a small corner of my room into a dedicated plant space, and it has quickly become my favorite part of the house.</p></blockquote><h2><strong>Choosing the Spot</strong></h2><blockquote><p>The corner I chose gets a steady stream of indirect light, which makes it ideal for most houseplants. Before, it was just an empty space, but I realized it could easily be turned into a little sanctuary. Corners have a way of feeling forgotten, and filling one with greenery instantly changes the mood of the room.</p></blockquote><h2><strong>The Plants I Picked</strong></h2><blockquote><p>I wanted a mix of plants that were both forgiving and visually striking. For now, my green corner has three main residents:</p></blockquote><ul><li><p><strong>Spider Plant</strong> &#8211; An easy classic, with arching leaves that spill beautifully from a pot. It brings movement and life without demanding too much care.</p></li><li><p><strong>Monstera Cutting</strong> &#8211; I started with just a cutting, and even though it&#8217;s still growing roots, it feels like a promise of the big, dramatic leaves to come. It&#8217;s a plant with personality, and I&#8217;m excited to see how it develops.</p></li><li><p><strong>Malabar Spinach</strong> &#8211; This one is special because it&#8217;s both ornamental and edible. Its glossy green leaves climb with a gentle determination, and I love the idea of having a plant that&#8217;s practical as well as beautiful.</p></li></ul><h2><strong>Setting Up the Corner</strong></h2><blockquote><p>I placed the spider plant on a small stand so its leaves could cascade outward. The monstera cutting rests in a glass jar of water next to it catching the light in a simple but striking way. The malabar spinach sits in a deeper pot, where it can climb naturally once I guide it with a small trellis. it has already found a neighboring pothos and is climbing its support.</p><p>To balance the space, I added a grow light for extra support, since I am also growing spiderettes. In the evenings, it gives the corner a cozy glow while keeping the plants happy.</p></blockquote><h2><strong>The Care Routine</strong></h2><blockquote><p>I try to keep things simple: water only when the soil feels dry, give the leaves a gentle wipe to keep dust away, and adjust their positions if they start reaching too strongly toward the light. The malabar spinach gets a little extra attention since it grows faster than the others&#8212;it&#8217;s fun to check in daily and see new growth.</p></blockquote><h2><strong>Why It Matters</strong></h2><blockquote><p>This corner has become more than just a decoration. It&#8217;s a reminder to care for something daily, to slow down, and to notice small changes. Watching the monstera cutting slowly root, or the spinach vines stretch a little taller each week, feels grounding.</p><p>It&#8217;s amazing how three simple plants can transform an unused corner into a space full of life. And the best part? It&#8217;s only the beginning.</p></blockquote><div class="captioned-image-container"><figure><a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" Here&#8217;s what I found.</p><div><hr></div><h3>&#127806; The Big Six Crops</h3><p>The dataset is centered around <strong>six main crops</strong>: Maize, Rice, Barley, Wheat, Cotton, and Soybean. Each crop appears in large, almost equal proportions, giving us a balanced view of agricultural practices.</p><div class="subscription-widget-wrap-editor" data-attrs="{&quot;url&quot;:&quot;https://www.plantscholar.com/subscribe?&quot;,&quot;text&quot;:&quot;Subscribe&quot;,&quot;language&quot;:&quot;en&quot;}" data-component-name="SubscribeWidgetToDOM"><div class="subscription-widget show-subscribe"><div class="preamble"><p class="cta-caption">Thanks for reading Plant Scholar! Subscribe for free to receive new posts and support my work.</p></div><form class="subscription-widget-subscribe"><input type="email" class="email-input" name="email" placeholder="Type your email&#8230;" tabindex="-1"><input type="submit" class="button primary" value="Subscribe"><div class="fake-input-wrapper"><div class="fake-input"></div><div class="fake-button"></div></div></form></div></div><p>The most common crop in the dataset was <strong>Maize</strong>, slightly ahead of Rice and Barley.</p><div><hr></div><h3>&#128167; Rainfall and Water Needs</h3><p>When looking at <strong>rainfall requirements</strong>, Rice came out on top, averaging about <strong>550 mm</strong> of rainfall. Soybean and Wheat followed closely, while Maize required the least.</p><p>This lines up with what we know from real-world agriculture: Rice thrives in wetter conditions, while Maize is relatively more drought-tolerant.</p><div><hr></div><h3>&#127777;&#65039; Temperature Preferences</h3><p>Interestingly, all six crops had very <strong>similar average temperature needs</strong> &#8212; around <strong>27.5&#176;C</strong>. This suggests the dataset is modeled around warm, tropical-to-subtropical farming conditions where temperature doesn&#8217;t vary much between crops.</p><div><hr></div><h3>&#127793; Soil Matters: Top Crops by Soil Type</h3><p>Each soil type had its &#8220;favorite&#8221; crops:</p><ul><li><p><strong>Clay</strong>: Rice dominated, followed by Cotton and Barley.</p></li><li><p><strong>Sandy</strong>: Wheat thrived the most.</p></li><li><p><strong>Loam</strong>: Maize and Barley were top performers.</p></li><li><p><strong>Peaty</strong>: Wheat and Barley led the pack.</p></li><li><p><strong>Silt</strong>: Rice was the clear winner.</p></li><li><p><strong>Chalky</strong>: Soybean took the top spot.</p></li></ul><p>This reflects the natural strengths of different soils &#8212; for example, clay holding more water (perfect for Rice), and sandy soils favoring Wheat.</p><div><hr></div><h3>&#127775; Key Takeaways</h3><ul><li><p><strong>Rice is the thirstiest crop</strong> in this dataset.</p></li><li><p><strong>Temperature wasn&#8217;t a major differentiator</strong>, hovering around 27&#176;C for all crops.</p></li><li><p><strong>Soil type has a strong influence</strong> on which crops dominate.</p></li></ul><p>In short, this dataset shows that while temperature may not vary much in these records, <strong>water and soil</strong> play a crucial role in determining which crops succeed.<br><br>Here is a simple charting I did with the dataset</p><pre><code><code>import pandas as pd

Sensors in the soil could track moisture, nutrients, and growth patterns, feeding into an AI model that gives real-time advice.</p></li><li><p><strong>Community Plant Health Tools</strong> &#8211; A system that helps community gardens and schools manage their plants better, making it easier for groups to grow food together.</p></li><li><p><strong>Sustainable Farming Insights</strong> &#8211; Using AI to predict how plants respond to different environments, which could help make local gardening and farming more resilient.</p></li><li><p><strong>Plant Personality Project</strong> &#8211; This one&#8217;s more fun: what if AI could &#8220;give your plant a voice,&#8221; sending little updates or reminders in a personality that matches the plant?</p></li></ul><div class="captioned-image-container"><figure><a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" href="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!zzzt!,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fbf671397-290c-4eec-b0b4-f2e298291dee_1024x1024.png" data-component-name="Image2ToDOM"><div class="image2-inset"><picture><source type="image/webp" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!zzzt!,w_424,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fbf671397-290c-4eec-b0b4-f2e298291dee_1024x1024.png 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!zzzt!,w_848,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fbf671397-290c-4eec-b0b4-f2e298291dee_1024x1024.png 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!zzzt!,w_1272,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fbf671397-290c-4eec-b0b4-f2e298291dee_1024x1024.png 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!zzzt!,w_1456,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fbf671397-290c-4eec-b0b4-f2e298291dee_1024x1024.png 1456w" sizes="100vw"><img src="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!zzzt!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fbf671397-290c-4eec-b0b4-f2e298291dee_1024x1024.png" width="1024" height="1024" data-attrs="{&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/bf671397-290c-4eec-b0b4-f2e298291dee_1024x1024.png&quot;,&quot;srcNoWatermark&quot;:null,&quot;fullscreen&quot;:null,&quot;imageSize&quot;:null,&quot;height&quot;:1024,&quot;width&quot;:1024,&quot;resizeWidth&quot;:null,&quot;bytes&quot;:1579148,&quot;alt&quot;:null,&quot;title&quot;:null,&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/png&quot;,&quot;href&quot;:null,&quot;belowTheFold&quot;:false,&quot;topImage&quot;:true,&quot;internalRedirect&quot;:&quot;https://www.plantscholar.com/i/171761921?img=https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fbf671397-290c-4eec-b0b4-f2e298291dee_1024x1024.png&quot;,&quot;isProcessing&quot;:false,&quot;align&quot;:null,&quot;offset&quot;:false}" class="sizing-normal" alt="" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!zzzt!,w_424,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fbf671397-290c-4eec-b0b4-f2e298291dee_1024x1024.png 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!zzzt!,w_848,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fbf671397-290c-4eec-b0b4-f2e298291dee_1024x1024.png 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!zzzt!,w_1272,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fbf671397-290c-4eec-b0b4-f2e298291dee_1024x1024.png 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!zzzt!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fbf671397-290c-4eec-b0b4-f2e298291dee_1024x1024.png 1456w" sizes="100vw" fetchpriority="high"></picture><div class="image-link-expand"><div class="pencraft pc-display-flex pc-gap-8 pc-reset"><button tabindex="0" type="button" class="pencraft pc-reset pencraft icon-container restack-image"><svg role="img" width="20" height="20" viewBox="0 0 20 20" fill="none" stroke-width="1.5" stroke="var(--color-fg-primary)" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg"><g><title></title><path d="M2.53001 7.81595C3.49179 4.73911 6.43281 2.5 9.91173 2.5C13.1684 2.5 15.9537 4.46214 17.0852 7.23684L17.6179 8.67647M17.6179 8.67647L18.5002 4.26471M17.6179 8.67647L13.6473 6.91176M17.4995 12.1841C16.5378 15.2609 13.5967 17.5 10.1178 17.5C6.86118 17.5 4.07589 15.5379 2.94432 12.7632L2.41165 11.3235M2.41165 11.3235L1.5293 15.7353M2.41165 11.3235L6.38224 13.0882"></path></g></svg></button><button tabindex="0" type="button" class="pencraft pc-reset pencraft icon-container view-image"><svg xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" width="20" height="20" viewBox="0 0 24 24" fill="none" stroke="currentColor" stroke-width="2" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" class="lucide lucide-maximize2 lucide-maximize-2"><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line></svg></button></div></div></div></a></figure></div><p></p><p>I don&#8217;t know yet which of these will stick, but that&#8217;s part of the journey&#8212;I want to explore and learn. There&#8217;s something about the way they grow&#8212;quietly, patiently&#8212;that feels soothing and full of life. But over the years, I&#8217;ve often found myself starting over, trying to learn why some plants thrive while others don&#8217;t. At the same time, I like coding and AI. The vast possibilities of artificial intelligence fascinate me, and I believe it has the power to transform lives.</p><p>So, I&#8217;ve decided to bring these two worlds together. Over the next few years, my mission is to explore how AI can be used to make plant care smarter, more accessible, and more sustainable. From building tools that help people keep their houseplants alive, to creating AI-powered systems that support community gardens and urban farming, I want to combine my love for technology and nature to make a meaningful impact&#8212;starting with my own community.</p><p>This is not just about coding or growing plants. It&#8217;s about growing ideas, growing resilience, and hopefully, growing a future where people and nature thrive together. &#127807;&#10024;</p><div class="subscription-widget-wrap-editor" data-attrs="{&quot;url&quot;:&quot;https://www.plantscholar.com/subscribe?&quot;,&quot;text&quot;:&quot;Subscribe&quot;,&quot;language&quot;:&quot;en&quot;}" data-component-name="SubscribeWidgetToDOM"><div class="subscription-widget show-subscribe"><div class="preamble"><p class="cta-caption">Thanks for reading Plant Scholar!
